CHAPTER ONE
The Arrival
The dawn had not yet broken when the steam frigate slipped past the granite breakwater. A curtain of dense salt fog clung to the rigging, muting the calls of the harbor watchmen into distant, ghostly echoes.
Captain Alistair stood by the wheelhouse, his wool coat damp with morning dew. Twenty-four days at sea had stripped away the illusions of their voyage. Ahead lay the ancient coastal city of Valenmoor—a labyrinth of slate roofs, lantern-lit alleys, and secrets long buried under the tide.
"Drop anchor at pier seven," he ordered quietly. The brass telegraph chimed, signaling the engine room below. As the iron chains rattled through the hawseholes, a flock of gulls scattered into the grey sky.
On the cobblestone wharf, a lone figure held a sputtering paraffin lamp. When the gangway touched the timber boards, the man stepped forward, pulling his collar high against the biting breeze.
"You are Captain Vance?" the stranger inquired, his voice hoarse.
"I am," Alistair replied, descending the gangway with firm strides. "And I presume you have the ledger Lord Harrington promised."
The stranger hesitated, glancing over his shoulder toward the darkened warehouses. "The ledger is safe, Captain. But you must understand—the city is no longer under Harrington’s control. The Guild has seized the customs house, and every vessel arriving from the eastern archipelago is being searched before sundown."
Alistair gripped the leather map case under his arm. "Then we move tonight."
